I have a B.A. in Spanish and Religion Studies, graduated 3 years ago. Not directly applicable, but I write and speak well.

I have the mind for business, but not the experience. I am a fast learner and thrive in a quick-paced environment. I love research and learning about people and business.

Here is some of my experience:

Bilingual Administrative Clerk
• Held security clearance and cleared background check to handle personally identifiable information.
• Performed a variety of human resources functions, such as processing highly sensitive applicant data, auditing and transmitting payroll, fingerprinting new hires, and contacting applicants to determine level of Spanish proficiency and eligibility for federal employment.

Spanish Teacher
• Designed absorbing lessons for Spanish I and II. Promptly returned graded material.
• Engaged students in classroom activities with the appealing use of technology and games.
• Nurtured the growth of each student by closely monitoring progress and behavior.
• Maintained excellent relationships and communications with parents and administration.

• Led a group of children in acting and art classes at a charity-aided day camp.

• Served as the bilingual office contact for Spanish-speaking customers.
• Assisted customers so that they had a pleasant experience with the company.

I am thinking that I could frame my experience in a way that highlights my presentation-giving enthusiasm, my genuine connection to people, and my conscientious communication skills.

I also have participated in activities in college and had leadership roles.

Any ideas? What should I focus on in my cover letter? Should I leave anything out of my resume (i.e. server)?

Also, do you have any idea what sort of time commitment this kind of position entails? It pays well, has the opportunity for commission, and has great benefits.

Most B2B sales jobs require B2B sales experience or at the very least sales experience. Your resume does not indicate either. This does not mean you cannot get the job of course, but you need something to show some sales attributes. I would consider adding a "relevent skills" or similar to your resume where you can highlight some sales attributes and characteristics…such as experience in negotiation, competitive (that is sales), strong relationship builder and so on to demonstrate that even though you are not an experienced sales person you do have the qualities. This should help you in the door at least.

Since I work for an investment firm I am unable to open an account at another firm due to SEC rules. However, I want to open a trading account. I talked with the operations manager and he said I could just open it under my boss. So not only would my boss get to see what trades I make and how much I invest, he would get a commission. For example, my boss knows that I have a lot of a particular stock. One day it was down a significant amount and he kept bringing it up, almost rubbing it in my face.

QUESTION:

What can/should I do about this?

I think it is a conflict of interest that my primary supervisor also see into my account and activity. I am not cracking open my piggy bank, I have serious money to invest and I take it seriously.

He is a very weak person and will be offended if I select another broker to have it under.

The main (and only) HR manager is an absolute b*tch to me because I am young and cute and she is old, ugly and single. It’s not like I can trust her.

I do not want to offend my boss, expose my personal life/decisions, or deprive myself of making some significant gains/trades in this market.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to handle this situation. Thank you for any and all advice.

Well I gotta say I’d use the dictaphone feature on my cell phone and record any activity which makes me uncomfortable. Or more quickly call home and have it recorded on that voicemail. That’s before I calmly, prudently, and equally covertly, draw a clear line for my boss. I submit you have value, protect it.

Perhaps the rules have changed over the last 15 years, but there was no SEC rule prohibiting account firm placement. If there was it wasn’t enforced. We had various accounts at various firms. That could be prohibitive to the ‘free market.’ What if I worked for a small firm? Could I only invest in that small firms products? That would knock the average investor out of most IPO’s. Check your sources diligently. I’m nearly positive that unless you are an officer or insider to the firm, trading specifically in it’s securities, you can trade through anyone.
